This page provides details on a John Warland who married Clarice Johnson, formerly Taney, nee Hemy, in 1935. It is still a work in progress (19 May 2020). The history of this page started with the discovery of a Clarice Henrietta Warland who died in 1979 in North Rockhampton, Queensland. Clarice was not previously known and so her surname proved a mystery - until a couple of clues came up. Some of the details below have been provided by the granddaughter of Frederick Taney.
The name Hemy was once Hemmi. Johannes Hemmi (1740-?) came from Germany to the United Kingdom.
Details of the Hemy family has been taken from the following sites:
Henri Fredrick/Friedrich Hemy (12 November 1818, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland - 10 June 1888) married Margaret MacDonald (1819, Newcastle on Tyne - ). They had children all born in Newcastle on Tyne - see second link above for more details)
The Hemy family migrated to Australia after 1850 (one source says Thomas was born during this trip, but that was in 1850).
Henri Christopher Hemy (30 January 1854, Newcastle Upon Tyne - 8 January 1934, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK) married Eugenie Elisa Harding (1856, France - 22 January 1936, Perth) on 10 July 1877 in Ribbon and had children all born in Newcastle on Tyne.
(Note, a Bernard Hemy with David H Thomas wrote a book titled 'The life of Henry Christopher Henry' in 1994. The book notes that Hemy may have been a Royalist whose estate was confiscated during the Commonwealth ... in 1879).
The John Warland who is the subject of this page may be the son of Edward and Johannah Warland. Some of the evidence found to date appears to support the possibility, however there is enough doubt to be unsure if this is the same man. A key piece of supporting evidence is the link with Perth - the John Warland born in NSW in 1898 died in Perth in 1954, recorded as the son of Edward and Johannah Warland.
John Warland was born 19 March 1898, Hillgrove (NSW BDM Ref 12615/1898) to Edward Henry Warland (1858 - 1917). Edward Henry Warland appears in the Sands Directory at Tingha as a carpenter in 1890. Edward married (Johannah) Hannah Anderson, the daughter of Patrick and Mary Ann Anderson, at Hillgrove, east of Armidale, in 1897 (NSW BDM Ref 3294/1897).
John Warland enlisted for WW1 on 7 December 1916 at Armidale, NSW. He was 18 years and 5 months. He listed his parents as Edward H Warland of Terrington (possibly a property name), NSW. He served with the 5th Machine Gun Battalion during WW1.
Claude Doughty Hemy married Sarah P Straughan in Perth in 1909 (BDM Ref 420)
Frederick William Taney was a London-based magician.
According to this Wikitree page about Frederick Taney managed by Kerrie Garden (and last modified in November 2020), Federick Taney was born in 1878 (and baptised on 27 March 1878) in the town of Fakenham, North Norfolk, UK. He was the son of Frederick Taney, a store dealer/grocery store and Emma Charlotte (nee Chastney) who had married in 1876 at the Fakenham Parish Church.
The Wikitree page notes that Taney married Ada (or Adeline) Maria Jones (born about 1876) on 26 December 1898 at Christ Church, Greenwick, Kent, England. They had two children:
At some point, Frederick Taney left the UK (and his wife and children) and headed for Australia. It is not (yet) known if he was divorced from Ada.
An 'F Taney' is recorded in the coastal passengers listing on FindMyPast in 1910 travelling from Melbourne to Sydney. The Sydney Morning Herald of 29 March 1913 carried a listing of passengers, including Mr F Taney, 'by the Persic via ports from London', on page 20 (an earlier article on 10 February 1913 noted that the Persic would travel via Melbourne, so it's not impossible that Frederick boarded the ship there to travel to Sydney). In 1913, an F W Taney born 1889 travelled from Sydney to Melbourne. He is not listed in the outwards passenger lists for 1852 to 1923.
At some point after his arrival, Frederick Taney appears to have travelled to Western Australia. The Mount Magnet Miner and Lennonville Leader of 23 August 1913 carried a notice for 'Mr F W Taney - the well-known London Magician', who would be touring the goldfields and doing a performance at the Mechanics Institute, Lennonville on 30 August 1913, with 'the esteemed favor of the patronage of the residents of Lennonville and neighbourhood for the above entertainment'.
Frederick William Taney was recorded in the electoral rolls at Fremantle in 1914.
Clarice Henrietta Hemy married Frederick William Taney, a magician (according to his military service history) from Osborne Park, in Claremont in 1914 (BDM Ref 87).
Fred and Clarice Taney had two children:
Claude D Hemy, of the Western Australian Artillery, who had fought in the Boer War, also served in Egypt during WW1 with the 8th Battery Field Artillery, AIF(The West Australian, 16 February 1915).
Frederick William Taney and Clarice Henrietta Taney were both recorded in the electoral roll for Perth, Western Australia, in 1916 and 1917.
Eugenie Isabel Hemy married Hubert W Froude in Claremont in 1916 (BDM Ref 1). They lived at Wittenoom Street, Collie where he was a local government councillor. They had a daughter on 12 February 1923 (The West Australian 19 February 1923). Hubert Froude died in March 1936, according to the Sunday Times of 22 March 1936.
Eugenie Froude died in 1965.
According to his service record, Frederick William Taney aged 40 from Osborne Park and a magician, enlisted for WW1 in 1918. His record has not been digitised.
Frederick William Taney died at the Wooroloo Sanatorium in Perth on 8 May 1919. (WA BDM Ref 92) The Western Mail (Perth) notice on 16 May 1919 stated that he was the beloved husband of Clarice Taney (nee Hemy) and loving father of 'little Doreen and Eric'. He was 41.
Peter Johnson was born around 1890 in England.
It is not known yet the circumstances of how Clarice Taney (nee Hemy) met or knew Peter Johnson, but there was not a long time between the death of Frederick and the marriage to Johnson. Clarice H Taney married Peter Johnson in Fremantle in 1919 (BDM Ref 185). She was recorded in the electoral rolls in Fremantle in 1925.
Peter Johnson cannot yet be identified and it is not yet known how long the marriage lasted, as Clarice married John Warland in 1935 (see below). Clarice was recorded as Mrs P Johnson as late as 1934, so it is assumed she was married for this period.
A Frederick Taney of Osborne Park WA was recorded in the WA Gazette in 1923 owing money to the government. It is not known if or how he may be connected with Frederick William Taney.
Clarice Henrietta Johnson was recorded in the electoral roll in 1925 for both Swan and Fremantle, Western Australia. This might suggest (given she is recorded in Swan in 1931) that she first lived in the Fremantle area then moved to Swan.
Two Peter Johnsons are recorded in the electoral rolls for 1925, in Swan and Kalgoorlie. The one in Swan appears to be living at Roleystone as a farmer, where Eric Taney is recorded in 1926. Peter Johnson is believed to have died in 1925 in Perth (BDM Ref 370), according to the Australian Death Index 1787 - 1985. The online Western Australian BDM Records show that BDM Ref 370 refers to a Peter Johnson who died in Perth in 1926.
Eric Taney was recorded attending a children's ball at school at Roleystone in The Swan and Canning Times and Hills Gazette of 17 December 1926. He was again noted winning an award for life saving in The West Australian on 27 March 1930. It may be worth noting that Clarice's mother was recorded living at Roleystone when she died.
Clarice Henrietta Johnson was recorded in the electoral roll for Swan, Western Australia, in 1931. As noted above, a Peter Johnson (the only one in WA) was recorded in Fremantle in 1931 but this may be a different man if Clarice's Peter died in 1926.
John Warland (born 19 March 1898, Hillgrove (NSW BDM Ref 12615/1898), the son of Edward Henry Warland (1858 - 1917) and (Johannah) Hannah Anderson, left Cessnock in NSW for Western Australia in 1931.
The Cessnock Eagle and South Maitland Recorder of 10 April 1931 noted that: Mr. Jack Warland, of South Cessnock, doesn't consider distance any object when he wants a job. Recently Jack worked for a big company which had a contract at Pipers' Flat (where MacDougal topped the score). The next contract was in West Australia. Jack didn't mince matters, for, after spending a holiday at South Cessnock with his mother, he packed his port and started the long track (per car) for the West. The spirit of a true Australian.
It seems possible that John Warland met Clarice Johnson (formerly Taney, nee Hemy) sometime after he reached Western Australia.
Electoral records show that a John Warland was registered in Kalgoorlie in 1931, and was again recorded there in 1936 and 1937.
According to her biography on the Carnamah Historial Society and Museum website, Dorine Taney was living in Three Springs, north of Perth (towards Geraldton and north of Carnamah), in 1932. It is not known if her mother Clarice Johnson was also living there at the time. Dorine Taney won First Prize for an entry in the Three Springs Agricultural Show in 1932, according to her biography. It is assumed she met her husband to be, Leslie Byrne in Three Springs.
A very detailed biography for Leslie Charles Byrne and his family may be found on the Carnamah Historical Society and Museum website.
Leslie Charles Byrne was the son of Edmund Keen Byrne and Isabella Woods who married in 1890 in Chittering, WA (WA BDM Ref 259). Leslie Charles Byrne was registered in the electoral records in Kalgoorlie from 1925 to 1936 which might offer a clue as to the connection that Clarice Johnson (perhaps via her daughter Dorine) had with Kalgoorlie, perhaps how she met John Warland.
Dorine Clarice Taney married Leslie Charles Byrne in Perth in 1933 (BDM Ref 997). They had several children, as recorded in the link above:
According to the Carnamah website, the family initially farmed at Eastbourne Farm at Three Springs with Lesley's father until 1938. They left the district and moved to the Perth suburb of Midland Junction. From 1949 to 1954, Leslie farmed in Woodanilling, between Wagin and Katanning.
Claude Doughty Hemy died at Mt Lawley, Perth on 27 November 1934 (BDM Ref 2053). His funeral notice was placed in The West Australian of 30 November 1934. It noted that Hemy, of 51 North Street, Inglewood and of Hemy Brown Motors Ltd, Perth, took place at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Karrakatta on 29 November. 'At the conclusion of the burial service ... the last post was sounded by Bugler Yeatman, of the South African and Imperial Veterans, of which deceased was a member. Deceased was formerly a Lieutenant in the Australian Field Artillery and saw service with the 8th Battery in the AIF'.
His death notice in The West Australian of 28 November 1934 states that Claude Hemy was 'beloved husband of Sarah Hemy of 51 North Street, Ingelwood, and loved father of Jean; elder son of Mrs Eugene Hemy (or Roleystone), and brother of Paul (Roleystone), Ninette (Mrs Froude, Collie), Clarice (Mrs Johnston [sic], Roleystone); brother-in-law of Mrs and Mrs J Straughan (Perth)'. He was 56.
A memorial notice was placed in the West Australian on 27 November 1935 from J and R Straughan, Ron Mervyn and Joyce.
Henri Christopher Hemy died in 1934 aged 80.
The Daily News (Perth) of 1 March 1934 carried the following article, which also seems to confirm that Clarice Johnson was living with her mother in Roleystone at the time:
Word has been received by Mrs. C. H. Johnson, of Roleystone, of the death of her father, Dr. Henri Christopher Hemy, the Veteran Newcastle musician, who passed away recently at his home in Lovaine-place, Newcastle, at the age of 8O years. Although commercial work first attracted Dr. Hemy, he later went to St. Paulinas's Academy, Catterick, as music master. He was subsequently appointed local secretary of Trinity College, London, and settled in Newcastle. At various times he was organist at St. Dominic's Priory and St. Andrew's R.C. Church, Newcastle, and St. Cuthbert's Church. North Shields. He took the diploma of A.Mus. T.C., London, in 1879, and 10 years later became a Mus.B. of Trinity University, Toronto. In 1894 he took the degree of Mus.D. In addition to his playing and teaching, Dr. Hemy did much work in the direction of critical writings: on music, the fine arts and the drama. His grandson is Mr. Claude Hemy, of Perth, while a brother of the late Dr. Hemy is Charles Napier Hemy, R.A., the famous painter of marine subjects. Dr. Hemy was a son of the celebrated author of Hemy's pianoforte tutor.
Henri's wife Eugenie Hemy (nee Harding) died in 1936 - see below.
Gerald H S Hemy married Gwendoline H Kidd in Perth in 1935 (BDM Ref 1018).
Clarice Henrietta Johnson placed an advertisement in The West Australian on 16 August 1935 for land as follows: Portion of Canning Location 32, being Lot 95, standing in the name of Clarice Henrietta Johnson, containing 12 acres approximately 7 miles west of Kelmscott [just west of Roleystone]. Described as approximately 9 acres 1st class, balance 2nd class. Improvements: All cleared, 8 chains draining, 55 chains wire fencing. Permanent creek and spring, 4 room house, back and front verandahs, 3 sheds, 3 acres citrus and stone fruit trees. Quantity of stock and plant. Good garden land.
As noted earlier, it is believed that Peter Johnson died in 1926. Clarice H Johnson married John Warland in Fremantle in 1935 (WA BDM Ref 35).
John Warland is believed to be the John Warland, born 1898, the son of Edward and Johannah Warland who was a miner from NSW in Kalgoorlie in the 1940s, and who died in Perth in 1954.
Electoral records show that a John Warland was registered in 1936 and 1937 in Kalgoorlie, WA.
The West Australian of 24 January 1936 had a death notice for Eugenie Eliza Hemy 'widow of the late Henri Christopher Hemy and loved mother of Henry, Paul, Frank, Eugenie (Mrs H W Froude), Vincent and Clarice (Mrs J Warland); aged 79 years. Eugenie E Hemy died in Perth in 1936 (BDM Ref 208).
Clarice is then recorded in the electoral records as follows:
A John Warland, aged 42 (b 1898), a miner of Hannan Street Kalgoorlie, was fined for having kept a premise at 73A Cheetham Street as a common betting house (Kalgoorlie Miner 11 June 1940).
Likely another John Warland (given the different age and details), aged 47 (born 1893) and single, was arrested and sentenced to four months jail for indecent exposure in June 1940, according to the Kalgoorlie Miner of 18 June 1940.
Perhaps connected with this - or not - John and Clarice Warland decided to move to Queensland.
Clarice and John Warland, and Eric Taney, moved to Toowoomba by 1940 where Eric Taney (now aged 24) enlisted for World War 2 (QX10248). He gave his next of kin as Clarice Warland.
Again, it is not entirely clear if it is the same man but John Warland born 1898 in NSW appears to have returned to Kalgoorlie (or never left?) in 1942.
John Warland, the son of Edward and Johannah Warland of Vincent Street, South Cessnock, NSW, according to his service file (digitised) and born 19 March 1898 in Hillgrove NSW, enlisted on 19 March 1942 (WX35128) at Kalgoorlie Goomalling WA, giving his permanent address as 'Royal Chambers', Brookman St, Kalgoorlie.
The West Australian of 11 September 1943 noted that P/O Claude Dominic Hemy, RAFVR, the son of Mr and Mrs P H Hemy of River Road, Kelmscott and brother of Henzell Hemy, was missing presumed killed in the Bay of Biscay during Anti-Submarine Patrols. The notice recorded that he was the much-loved grandson of the late Mr H C Hemy, MusDoc, Newcastle on Tyne, and the late Madame E Hemy or Roleystone.
The electoral records notes that both Clarice Warland and John Warland were in Darling Downs, Queensland in 1943. This would seem to confirm that it is a different John Warland than the one who enlisted for WW2 in Kalgoorlie, but this needs to be confirmed from the electoral records (to see if the two names are listed at the same address).
A 'C Warland' arrived in Perth in October 1946 as recorded in the West Australian of 7 October 1946. Perhaps she was returning to see family, or perhaps her marriage had ended?
1950 - John Warland in Pittsworth, Queensland
A John Warland, the partner of a Miss Norma Hunter was noted in the Pittsworth Sentinel of 23 May 1950 attending an event. Could it be that John had split from Clarice by this time? Pittsworth is to the south west of Toowoomba.
A John Warland appears in the Queensland electoral records.
The electoral records show Eric Robert Taney in Fisher, Queensland, from 1949 to 1980.
The husband of Dorine Byrne (nee Taney), Leslie Charles Byrne died in 1955 in Katanning, WA (WA BDM Ref 13).
Dorine Byrne then married Arthur Edwin Morrow, in Perth in 1960. They lived in the Perth suburb of Como, then at 108 Brookton Highway, Roleystone and finally on Valentine Road at Binningup.
A John Warland, aged 56, of Stirling Street Perth, collapsed in his hotel and died on 14 August 1954, according to the Sunday Times of Perth of 15 August 1954. WA BDM Records show his parents as Edward H Warland and Johannah Warland (Ref 1974), which definitely links him with that family.
John Warland's funeral notice refers to him by his service number WX35128 and the words 'Private John Warland of 10th Australian Base Store Platoon and late of 63 Stirling Street, Perth'.
Clarice was recorded in Queensland in the 1958 electoral rolls in Capricornia, Queensland (Rockhampton area). John Warland, on the other hand, was recorded in the rolls in Oxley at this time.
Clarice Warland is recorded as follows until her death in 1979.
Eric Taney died in Brisbane on 6 February 1978 (Ref 1978/B/84429). There is no record of a marriage or children.
Clarice Henrietta Warland (the daughter of 'Henry Henry' and 'Egiene' [sic] who died on 12 June 1979 aged 86 (QLD BDM Ref 1979/C/3182, therefore born around 1893), was buried at North Rockhampton Cemetery (Ref 8 10 19 RC).
The relationship - if any - between Frederick William Warland and Clarice Henrietta Warland is not yet known, perhaps it is a coincidence that she was buried in the same location, but her relationship with other members of the Warland family is not yet known.
