David and his wife Isabella and their daughters Christina (born 1851) and Ann (born 1853) left Scotland as assisted passengers on the ship the Indian Ocean. Their infant daughter Ann died on the journey but is recorded in the Victorian BDM records (as Ann Croal). They arrived in 1854 in Warrnambool, Victoria Australia; the passenger listings recorded the surname as Croal.

According to the Worland family history, David and Isabella Croll were on the same ship coming to Australia as Joseph and Mary Worland and three children Sarah, Joseph and Richard. However, the Worlands arrived at Belfast/Port Fairy on 2 October 1853 on the Oitonia/Orthonia, so perhaps they met after arrival.

David worked as a carpenter at Warrnambool.

By 1857 they had made their way to Warrnambool where his brother David Croll lived.
