The story of Frank Warland Andrew, photographer

This story explores how Frank Warland Andrew got his second name. It is believed to be connected with his mother, but this is yet to be confirmed.

1732/1735 - Warlands in Sherborne

As we will see below, Henry Andrew lived and had children in Sherborne. George and Ann Warland had two children baptised in Sherborne in the early 1730s:

There is no reason to believe these Warlands have any connection to the story of Henry Andrew or his son Frank Warland Andrew.

From 1840 - The Andrew family of Cornwall

Henry Andrew was born in 1840 in St Austell, Cornwall. He was recorded in that location as an infant in the 1841 census then as an 11 year old in the 1851 census.

1841 census - St Austell, Cornwall

The 1841 census for St Austell, Cornwall, has the following individuals. Note that there are additional names recorded against St Stephen, St Austell, and St Mewan, St Austell. These are not included because Henry Andrew is recorded only against St Austell. It will be necessary to see the original census records to group these individuals correctly.

From 1840 - Who was Anne Warland?

According to the 1881 census, Henry Andrew's wife Anne was born in Weymouth, Dorset in 1840. Only two girls with similar names were born in Dorset around that time, neither in Weymouth (according to FindMyPast):

Is it possible that the details for Anne's birthplace in the 1881 census is incorrect? Could it have been mixed with where she married, and she was not from Dorset at all - perhaps she was from the Oxfordshire Warlands - which might explain why they ended up living in Abingdon, Oxfordshire?

The only other Ann Warland was one born in 1841, recorded at St Thomas, Oxford, Oxfordshire in the 1851 census. Ann's parents appear to be George Warland (born 1807), a sawyer, and possibly Ann Warland (born 1814). If this is the case, Ann's siblings may be Harriet Warland (born 1835), George Warland (born 1837), Elizabeth Warland (born 1839), Emma Warland (born 1843) and Alfred Warland (born 1848), and Henry Warland (born 1851). See below for her likely location in the 1861 census.

1851 census

The following individuals appear in the 1851 census in Sherborne, Dorset:

1859 - John Aish Warland marries in Sherborne

John Aish Warland married Elizabeth Clark on 12 June 1859 in Sherborne. These are likely to be the two that appear in the 1861 census for that location. Again, there is no reason to connect these Warlands with Ann who married Henry Andrew.

1861 census - The Andrew and Warland families in Sherborne, Dorset, and Ann Warland from Oxfordshire

Only John Warland (born 1836) and Elizabeth Warland (born 1837) (probably the pair who married in 1859) were recorded in Sherborne in the 1861 census.

The following Andrew family members were recorded in Sherborne in 1861:

The Ann Warland born in Oxfordshire in 1841 had a number of siblings. One of them, Emma, is recorded in the household of Henry Warland, also a sawyer, in the 1861 census as a nursemaid. Henry may be Ann and Emma's uncle. A Robert Warland, probably another brother, is also recorded as a sawyer. But Ann Warland is not present in Oxfordshire. The only Ann Warlands born in 1840/1841 in the 1861 census are as follows:

1867 - Henry Andrew marries Anne (Warland?)

Henry Andrew met his wife to be, Anne, in Weymouth between the 1861 census and when they married in 1867. Perhaps Anne was working as a domestic servant in Sherborne, or Henry met her in London - we will never know.

Henry Andrew married Anne (possibly Warland) in Weymouth, Dorset, in 1867. Nobody with the first name Ann (or variants) and the surname Warland married in Weymouth that year, and nobody with the surname Warland married anywhere in Dorset. This means that: (a) Ann was not a Warland, (b) it was her second marriage, or (c) the surname was incorrectly recorded. It will be necessary to see the original record to know who Ann was. They appear to have moved 'back' to Sherborne, Dorset, where their children were born.

1893 - 1927 - Warland Andrew, Photographer of Abingdon

Warland Andrew - Photographer of Abingdon

Frank Warland Andrew is listed as a photographer living in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, from 1893 to 1927.

Frank's brother, Stanley P Andrew may also have been a photogapher living in New Zealand. He is noted three times in the newspapers in September 1927 (only) as a photographer of Wellington. A photographer with the same name took a number of photos that can be see at the National Library of New Zealand website.

1900 - Frank Warland Andrew marries

Frank Warland Andrew married in 1900 in Bristol, Gloucestershire. The name of his wife is not clear but it may be Theresa Agnes Louisa (possibly Cashen or Oatway, or Morgan) who was born in 1879. He appears to have had the following children, based on the 1911 census:

1901 census

The 1901 census for Abingdon shows Henry Warland (born 1841), Frank Warland Andrew and his wife Annie Andrew (born 1841), as well as Frank's brother Albert Henry Andrew (born 1869). The following are also listed:

Annie Andrew may have died after this census as she is not recorded in the 1911 census.

1911 census

The 1911 census shows Frank Warland Andrew and his brother Albert Henry Andrew (born 1869) in Abingdon. The following are also listed:
