Arthur McLean Warland (1854 - 1939) and Elizabeth Dagg

This page documents the story of some of the children of Arthur McLean Warland (1854 - 1939) and Elizabeth Dagg.

Life of Arthur McLean Warland (1854 - 1939)

Arthur McLean Warland was the third son of Thomas Alfred Warland (1828 - 1880). He married Elizabeth Dagg on 2 November 1975 in Sydney, and they had the following children:

From 1901 to 1919, Arthur McLean and Elizabeth Warland lived at 2 Raper Street, Newtown (Sydney). They then moved to 50 Rutland Street, Carlton, where they lived until 1930.

Arthur McLean Warland was employed by Sam Hoffnung, a large firm of importers and merchants in Sydney. The family history notes that at one time he saved the life of Hoffnung, who showed his appreciation by stipulating in his will that Arthur McLean could never be dismissed - he worked there until he was 84, and died soon after, on 30 September 1939.

Children of Arthur McLean and Elizabeth Warland

The eldest son, George Thomas Warland, appears in the same street as his brother Alfred Walter Warland in 1906, but not in 1907 and 1908; he re-appears in 1909. He married one Emily (surname not yet known) and lived at 'Glenalva', 14 Fleet Street, Carlton. He died on 30 November 1925 at Katoomba.

Alfred Walter Warland first appears in Sands Directories in 1905 at Fleet Street Carlton. He married Isabella Magee in 1903. (Just to add some confusion, one Alfred Walter H Warland (1881 - 1952) married an Ethel Jones in the same year. This other Warland was the son of Walter Edmund Warland (1846 - 1943), Alfred Walter Warland's uncle.) Alfred Walter Warland played full back for Newtown when Rugby League was established as a professional game. His death notice says he was formerly of 37 Fleet Street, Carton (Sydney) and was the loved father of May (Mrs Sproule) and Len Warland.

Their younger brother William Warland also appears in Fleet Street, Carlton, but in 1912 (only). In 1922, Alfred Warland is recorded at 37 Fleet Street while George is recorded at 14 Fleet Street. Alfred remained at the same address until 1932/33.

Their brother Ernest Warland appears in the directory for Summer Hill for much of the same time, while their other brother William H Warland appears to be living in Lakemba. (Note: for those not familiar with Sydney, these suburbs are all in roughly the same area of Sydney).
