Warlands in the Oxford area (Fencott, Bletchingdon, Islip and Kidlington)

While the first reference to 'Warland' (as a type of land) appears just to the south east of Oxford, at Cowley, the first recorded references to the name Warland are in the general area to the north and north-east, including the towns and villages of Noke, Fencott, Bletchingdon, Islip and Kidlington. This page is about Warlands in Fencott, Bletchingdon, Islip and Kidlington. See this page for information about the Warland families in the village of Noke.

Various Warlands in the Oxford area from the 1600s

The following information was provided by Gerald J Gracey Cox to Shirley Warland in the early 1990's. The 'Index of Oxfordshire People in Deeds and Charters' by Hassell (1966) has the following entries:

Kidlington - from 1640 or earlier

Kidlington is about six kilometres to the north west of Noke. It is a much larger town compared with Noke.

At least two children, probably siblings, were born in and baptised at Kidlington after 1640 to a William Warland:

Both of these are recorded in the Kidlington Parish Register. The father of these two children, William Warland senior, may be the William Warland born in Noke in 1607, although this is pure speculation.

Two Warland children were born to (as yet) unknown parents in Kidlington in 1668 and 1670:

Based on the dates they are probably brothers and may, possibly, be the children of William baptised in 1640.

Noke/Fencott/Bletchingdon - from the late 1600s

Some of the information in this section has been derived from this website managed by Jackie Settle, who has kindly given her permission to use this information. Please contact Jackie via that site if you wish to use any of the information below.

Fencot is small village about five kilometres north east of Noke, while Bletchingdon is about seven kilometres north west of Noke.

Based on names and dates it appears possible that Robert Warland, the son of Robert Warland and Jane Bignell and baptised in Noke on 12 November 1680, may have moved to Fencott in the late 1600s where he married and had a son named Edmund Warland. One Edmund Warland was recorded as an apprentice to John Paxton, Woolmen's Company, in 1710. Edmund Warland married Mary Johnson possibly in Fencot around 1745, based on the birth dates and location of their children. Edmund Warland was certainly living in Fencot before 1746 when he married Mary Johnson. Edmund and Mary had the following children:

  • Edmund Warland (15 May 1746 - 23 March 1819)
  • Henry Warland (9 October 1747, Fencot - ?)
  • Ann Warland (21 December 1748, Fencot - ?)
  • John Warland (1749, Fencot - 1832)
  • Thomas Warland (15 July 1753, Charlton on Otmoor - 1831)
  • Robert Warland (18 July 1757, Fencot - )
  • Mary Warland (24 September 1759 - 10 December 1759)
  • Mary Warland (26 September 1763, Fencot - ?)

Children of Edmund Warland and Mary Johnson - Edmund Warland (1746 - 1819)

Edmund and Mary Warland's first child Edmund Warland (1746 - 1819) married Alice Dutton (c1743 - 1821) and they had four children:

  • Edmund Warland (1771 - 1839). See below for further information.
  • Henry Warland (1777 - ). Probably the same person as Henry Warland, aged 65 (born 1776), a carpenter noted in the 1841 census in Oxfordshire.
  • Mary Warland (1776 - 1854).
  • John Warland (1781 - 1866). Probably the same person as John Warland, aged 60 (born 1781), a carpenter noted in the 1841 census in Oxfordshire. Based on the relationships shown in the 1851 census, John was married or otherwise related to Elizabeth Warland (born 1781), a butcher and Hannah Warland (born 1781) a nurse.

Edmund and Alice (nee Dutton) Warland's eldest son Edmund Warland (1771 - 1839) married Elizabeth Smith and they had at least six children:

  • Mary Warland (abt 1797 - )
  • George Warland (abt 1799 - ). Does not appear to be recorded in the 1841 or 1851 census and may have died by this time.
  • Robert Warland (abt 1801 - ). Probably the same person as Robert Warland, aged 40 (born 1801), a sawyer noted in the 1841 census in Oxfordshire. See below for further information.
  • Thomas Warland (abt 1803 - ). Migrated to NSW, Australia around 1845. See below for further information.
  • Elizabeth Warland (abt 1805 - ). Not recorded as a Warland in the 1841 or 1851 census.
  • Edmund Warland (abt 1808/1809 - ). Migrated to Tasmania, Australia. See below for further information.

Edmund Warland and his wife Elizabeth and their six children listed above are mentioned in a church document dated 10 January 1809, indicating that, as their clearly appear to have fallen on hard times and were considered to be poor, they were to be removed from the 'Parish or Township of Fencott and Mercott' and sent 'to the said Parish of Noke'. The document names their children as follows: 'Mary aged twelve years, George aged ten years, Robert aged eight years, Thomas aged six years, Elizabeth aged four years and Edmund aged six months'.

Based on relationships shown in the 1851 census, it appears that Edmund and Elizabeth's son Robert Warland (born abt 1801), a sawyer, married Elizabeth (born 1807) before 1835 and had the following children all born in Oxfordshire. They may have had other children as well:

  • Edwin Warland (1830 - ).
  • (Possibly Rhoda Warland (1833 - ), given the same name given to another child)
  • Edward Warland (1834 - )
  • Edmund Warland (1835 - )
  • Zelpha Warland (also shown as Zilpha Warland) (1840 - )
  • Roda Warland (also shown as Rodah Warland) (1843 - )

Edmund and Elizabeth Warland's son Thomas Warland (born abt 1803) met and married Rebecca Mary LeMare (born abt 1801) sometime before 1828. They appear in the 1841 census in London, where Thomas is shown as a clerk. They had a number of children one of whom was born in Oxfordshire, the remainder possibly in Stepney, London. The names listed below were provided by Warland family members and do not correlate completely with 1841 census records:

  • Thomas Alfred Warland (1828, Oxford - ?, Sydney, Australia). Probably the same person as Thomas Warland, aged 12 (born 1829), recorded in London in the 1841 census.
  • Brander LeMare Warland (12 June 1833, Stepney, UK - ?). Not recorded with that name in the 1841 census.
  • Henry Last Warland (12 June 1833, Stepney, UK - ?). Possibly the same person as Henry Warland, aged 10 (born 1831), a hawker recorded in London in the 1841 census.
  • Arthur Henry Warland (1838 - 1909). Probably the same person as Arthur Warland, aged 3 (born 1838), recorded in London in the 1841 census.
  • Rebecca Sarah LeMare Warland (1846? - ?). Does not appear to be recorded with that name, but there is a Sarah Warland aged 10 (born 1831) in the 1841 London census. The date of 1846 needs confirmation.

Thomas Warland (born abt 1803), his wife and children all migrated to Australia sometime around 1845 - see this page for more information.

Edmund and Elizabeth's youngest son Edmund Warland (abt 1808/1809 - ) also left the UK and migrated to Tasmania, Australia. (See this page for more information.

Children of Edmund Warland and Mary Johnson - John Warland (1749 - 1832)

Edmund and Mary Warland's fourth child, John Warland (1749 - 1832), a carpenter, married Sarah Jenkins/Jenkyns (c. 1746 - 1793). They appear to be living in Bletchingdon from mid 1775 and had the following children:

  • Anne Warland (bap 6 December 1778, Bletchingdon - ).
  • Sarah Warland (bap 8 August 1781, Bletchingdon - ). Married Robert Wyatt (b.1781 - ) 12 March 1811
  • Henry Warland (bap 4 February 1783, Bletchingdon - ). Does not appear to be recorded in the 1841 or 1851 census.
  • Mary Warland (bap 25 December 1784, Bletchingdon - ).
  • John Warland (bap 22 October 1786, Bletchingdon - ). Married Elizabeth (poss born 1792 based on 1851 census records). John is recorded in the 1841 census; both are recorded in the 1851 census. It is not (yet) known if they had children.
  • Elizabeth Warland (bap 8 June 1788, Bletchingdon - ).
  • Martha Warland (bap 3 January 1790, Bletchingdon - ).

Children of Edmund Warland and Mary Johnson - Thomas Warland (1753 - 1831)

Edmund and Mary Warland's fifth child, Thomas Warland (b July 1753, bap 15 July 1753 - March 1831 at Bletchingdon), married Ann Clark and appears to be living in Bletchingdon. Thomas and Ann Warland had the following children:

  • Henry Warland (1781 - 6 October 1781). Deceased by 1841 census.
  • Edmund Warland (1782 - March 1839, Bicester). Deceased by 1841 census.
  • John Warland (1783 - ?). Does not appear to be recorded in 1841 or 1851 census.
  • George Warland (1785, Bletchingdon - March 1873, Cambridge). Possibly the same person as George Warland, aged 55 (born 1786) recorded as a male servant in London in the 1841 census. May be connected with an Ellen Warland, same age but born in Scotland, also recorded in London in 1841. Recorded in the 1851 census living in Cambridgeshire.
  • Joseph Clark Warland (1787 - ?). Does not appear to be recorded in the 1841 or 1851 census.
  • Betty Clark Warland (1788 - ?).
  • Thomas Warland (1790 - 19 November ????). Married Elizabeth Duvall (1797 - 1877). Thomas does not appear to be recorded in the 1841 or 1851 census. His wife Elizabeth may be the same person as Elizabeth Warland, aged 45 (born 1796), reocorded in the 1841 census in Oxfordshire. She is not recorded in the 1851 census.
  • Henry Warland (1791, Bletchingdon - 1/4 1842). Married Letitia Turnbull (1786 - December 1873). Henry Warland is recorded in the 1841 census but, given his death the following year, is not recorded in the 1851 census. His wife Letitia Warland is recorded in the 1841 census but with a birth date of 1791. She is recorded in the 1851 census with a birth date of 1788. See the link for further information on this family.
  • Thomas Warland (1794, Bletchingdon - 12 May 1845 at 6 South Street, Cambridge). Married Elizabeth Duvall (1797 - 1877). See link for further information on this family.
  • Anne Warland, (1802 - ?)

Islip - from the late 1700's

Islip is a larger town about two kilometres north west of Noke.

In the late 1700s, one John Warland was living in Islip. John Warland could, potentially, be either of two John Warlands born with the same name in Bletchingdon: John Warland, born 1786, the son of John Warland (1749 - 1832) and Sarah Jenkins (c 1746 - 1793), who went on to marry Elizabeth (surname not known); or John Warland, born 1783, the son of Thomas Warland (1753 - 1831) and Ann Clark. Or he may be completely unrelated.

John married and had two children:

  • John Warland (dates not known), became a lawyer.
  • William Warland (c. June 1824, Islip (was Sudbury, Suffolk) - d. ? of grinders consumption)

William Warland was a wheelright by trade and married Emma Elizabeth Charlwood (also noted as Charwood) on 10 July 1843, at St Peter's Church, Oxford, UK. William and Emma had the following children:

  • William Warland (c. December 1844, Old Woodstock, Oxford, UK - 1844, Torrington, CT, USA, of dropsy). William migrated to the USA possibly with his brothers Walter and Robert
  • Robert Kenneth Warland (c. December 1846, Old Woodstock, Oxford, UK, d. 1932, Winsted, CT, USA). Robert Kenneth Warland married Julia EDEY (was PETLEY) (b.1855 Woodstock, UK - d. 1928 Winsted, CT, USA) on 25 December 1875 in Sudbury, Suffolk, UK. Migrated to the United States in the late 1890's, and took all his children except William (1877 - ). He was a harness maker by trade, a republican, a member of the Second Congregationalist Church
  • Emma Elizabeth Warland (September 1848, Old Woodstock, Oxford, UK - ?)
  • Walter Warland (October 1855, Old Woodstock, Oxford, UK - 17 July ?? at Strafford, CT, USA). Migrated to the United States with his brothers William and Robert.
